I’ve used this method for bedding hardware and have been very happy with the results. Nothing has leaked that I have done this way. The only gotcha is once in a while the butyl tape gets wrapped around a fastener if you have to turn it and are not through bolting. Combine this with an epoxy fitted G10 core tube in deck areas where it is balsa or wood and you have a watertight solution that should be good for many years.
